Kansas City Area Tech Session, November 3, 2021

Tech Session:  Wednesday, November 3, 2021, 7-9 PM

Location:  Slimmer’s Automotive, 901 Delaware St, Lawrence, KS 66044, (785) 843-5606

Contact:  strettel@tretteldesign.com, halboyles@2002sonly.com

Let’s Brake Our 2002s!

The brakes on a BMW 2002 (and most cars) are made up of several systems: Hydraulic, Boost, Apply, Warning, Balance and Wheel Brakes.  On a 2002 these systems are usually robust and very effective at their job of converting momentum (more correctly, kinetic energy) into heat and then dissipating that heat to slow or stop the vehicle.  The 2002’s brake systems don’t normally require much TLC but they definitely require periodic checkups and maintenance.

For this Tech Session, we will provide a quick overview of all the systems involved in braking, some tests of those systems that can be performed on the car, and a list of recommended maintenance.  For the finale, we will attempt to perform an adjustment of the rear brake shoes on live camera with no safety net!  If we survive, you’ll discover that this often-overlooked job yields great benefits including faster, straighter stopping and a parking brake that actually keeps the car parked where you left it!

Kansas City 2021 Fall Drive, September 18th, 2021

I hope all of you are staying safe and enjoying your cars whenever you can. If you have not yet heard, Bo made the difficult decision to cancel MidAmerica 02 Fest altogether this year in the interest of keeping everyone safe. With that in mind, I would like to provide a small regional alternative in the form of a one-day drive out of Lawrence, Kansas.

Last year, due to the same circumstances, a small group gathered at my home in Lawrence for a socially distant outdoor meet and greet. We spent some time chatting and making small repairs before driving from Lawrence to Weston Bend State Park in Missouri on a route featuring scenic country roads and a smidge of highway driving, all culminating in a group lunch at the park and an optional drive back to Lawrence the long and curvy way. We could never have imagined the same circumstances would exist a year later, but this year we’re doing it again.

Of course, if we’re going to gather it must be done safely. Masks are required, vaccinations are required, social distancing will be the norm, and group size will be limited. With that said, the entire event will take place outdoors so it should be easy to keep everyone safe.

Here is the schedule:

  • September 18, 2021
  • 8:30 AM: Coffee and conversation (with drinks, snacks, tools, and a sanitized restroom)
  • 10:30 AM: Drive from Lawrence, KS to Weston Bend State Park, MO
  • Noon-ish: Brown bag lunch in the park (local carry-out or bring your own food)
  • Later: Optional driving (route TBD)

And here are the details:

  • Free to attend
  • Limited group size
  • All BMW models welcome
  • Masks, social distancing, and safe protocols observed

TO RSVP: Please contact me directly and I will give you the address for the meet (strettel@tretteldesign.com). Let me know if you plan to bring a guest. We need to keep the group size reasonable, and yet we don’t want anyone to miss out, so please only RSVP if you’re reasonably sure you will be there.

This event is organized by the 2002 Forever chapter of the BMW CCA, a model-specific chapter for enthusiastic 1602, 1802, and 2002 owners nationwide. The event will feature all the usual CCA benefits including insurance for the group. Please contact me if you would like to know more about the chapter or would like to get involved.

Stay safe and hope to see you all soon.

– Scott Trettle

Kansas City Area Tech Session June 16th, 7 to 9 PM

Please join us for the 1st ‘Vintage Tech Night’ hosted by the BMW CCA 2002 Forever Chapter and the newly remodeled Slimmer’s Automotive in Lawrence, KS.  We are welcoming all vintage BMW’s but will focus on some common ’02 issues regarding various electrical faults, timing, and fuel vapor issues.  Other issues can certainly be discussed and covered as well. We are lucky to have 3-4 highly experienced 02 techs and historians on hand for this event as well as shop co-owner and Master Tech, Marcos Markoulatos. Snacks, refreshments and camaraderie with fellow vintage owners included! RSVP’s are not required, but emails with tech topic suggestions are welcome.

Thank you, and hope to see you there!

BMW CCA 2002 Forever Chapter Update, October 2020

The 2002 Forever Chapter is well established, but still tiny. We have about 200 members—but that only averages 4 per state! I figure we should be able to recruit 10x as many as we have, based on my knowledge of the local situation, and I think there are maybe 100x more cars out there. Please help build membership—many CCA members are waiting for renewal time which is understandable, but we appreciate those who have called the National Office to add our Chapter.

We have a Photo Contest underway! We have a bunch of entries in all contest categories—go to our website [www.2002forever.com] for detailed info and rules. Remember—there are PRIZES from 2002AD, Maximillian, Ireland Engineering, Bluntech, and La Jolla Independent! We have had Events around the country—both Tour events and Cars and Coffee events. Admittedly not many yet, but people are starting to carefully get out there while maintaining social distancing and wearing masks. Hopefully there will be events near you soon—talk to your friends about it. Contact me when you’re ready and I’ll help get insurance. We have made improvements to the website! We still have a way to go and it’s not yet polished, but we do have content now. We have 40 or more recommended shops around the country! We have the beginnings of an events list. Soon we’ll have a list of recommended parts suppliers and people who specialize in special STUFF for 2002s.

How did this happen, you ask? It happened because our members made recommendations! Send me more and I’ll list them and I’ll list you as the source! Member Duane Hong volunteered and created our Instagram account—@BMW2002forever. I don’t personally know what that means—I’m old—but it sounds like a good thing! We’re still working on artwork for stickers, shirts, and badges; still working on ‘cars and parts for sale’. Remember that this all started with your suggestions about what we needed to make this 2002 Forever Chapter valuable—don’t stop now. Tell me more.

Thanks, Terry

The BMWCCA 2002 Forever Chapter is pleased to announce the 2020 2002 Official Photo contest! April Reminder

Hi ’02 guys and gals!

Well, here we are in April 2020, stuck in our houses, wishing we were out there celebrating the formation of the 2002 Forever Chapter of the BMW CCA. On any normal year we’d be getting ready to join Bo Black in Arkansas at the Mid-America 02 Fest. For me that event is the high point of the year and I’m deeply saddened to miss it. And we’re all missing other car shows everywhere around the country—what a loss. Of course, these are first world problems of little importance—we will continue to isolate ourselves for the common good as long as necessary.

Eventually life will return to some semblance of normal. We’ll be able to relax, travel, gather together, eat in restaurants, shake hands, hug our friends—and have 2002 events! Maybe by late spring or summer we’ll be there; certainly by fall. The rescheduled Mid-America 02 Fest is in August; hopefully we’ll be able to have that one. Then the BMW CCA Octoberfest happens in California in September.  Those regional/national Octoberfests will be good opportunities for us to have our own 2002 Forever Chapter conventions at the same time and place. Plan on that—every time there’s a regional Octoberfest, we’ll have a big 2002 Chapter gathering.

In the meantime, submit stuff to the 2002 Forever website—news, event plans, project progress, even feature articles about cars, people, and past events. Anything you find interesting, others will too. Especially in these times of confinement, we all need entertainment.

Congratulations! Formation of the 2002 Forever Chapter has been approved! Jeff Gomon took our petition before the National Board and they approved us with enthusiasm! Now I have a bit more homework to do—bylaws and mailing address—and then the National Office will get us a bank account and file for corporate status in SC. I’m glad we have them helping us!

more updates later–Terry

(OLD)Status update on the new BMW 2002 chapter

Hello fellow 2002 Forever members!

Terry Sayther here again welcoming all of you petition signers to what WILL become our new non-geographic CCA Chapter—-we ARE the chapter. There’s about 300 of us so far, so we have well surpassed the CCA requirement for 250 members on the application petition. That was a big hurdle and we passed it easily.

Next we need a cadre of temporary officers. I have volunteered to be a temporary President, Doug in Chicago has volunteered to be temp vice president, Bryan Eagle is our webmaster–but we need a few more officers on the masthead. All the usual ones have to be listed—sec, treas, event master, newsletter editor, any others? I am planning to recruit leaders of events around the country to be Regional Vice Presidents or Czars or some such. The national club will be taking care of the legal stuff for us and the bank account, so that’s good news.

I suspect the temporary officers will 1.) not have much to do since Bryan and I are doing most of the work at this stage, and 2)be lightly pressured to become elected officers. I sincerely encourage anyone with the time and inclination to volunteer.

By the way, Paul Wegweiser has volunteered to be our official “Bluto Blutarsky”, a very important office, and Scott Aaron wants to be”VP of Special Projects” so that “he needn’t do anything”. I vote we accept those volunteers by acclaim.

In another week or so there will be a National Board Meeting at which Jeff Gomon  will present our case for chapter formation—we expect it to be approved. Meanwhile, Bryan and I are working on the website. He’s good at artwork, so that’s pretty well under control. I want to publish a list of nationwide vintage and 2002 events, so I need help with that. Please send me info about any known relevant events, who are the principal organizers,  contact info, and websites.

OK, thanks everybody, we’re well on our way. Thanks again for stepping up. More soon—Terry
